Gulf Beach Baptist Church's heritage has been rich and varied. In 1943 Rev. J.C. Alexander of Panama City First Baptist pursued a vision, resulting in J.E. Churchwell's donating a small plot of land on highway 98, near the present Wal Mart. "The little White Church," as it was fondly called was dedicated on April 9, 1944. Rev. Floyd Dykes served as the first pastor (1944-46). The church's present name was drawn from a hat on dedication day, while 10 charter members sat on cane bottom chairs. The early converts were baptized in a small stream beside the church. In 1948 the church became a mission of First Baptist Church of Panama City. Among the early pastors were: Rev. Burns, Coy Raffield, J.C. Odom, and R.H. Arnsperger. Rev. J.C. Faulk served as pastor from 1956-77. On April 14, 1957, records indicate that the body of 137 members affiliated with Northwest Coast Association and the Southern Baptist Convention. In the spring of 1957 the church purchased property on Thomas Drive. The new sanctuary located at 9721 Thomas Drive was dedicated on March 9, 1969, at which time "Brother" Faulk challenged the church with: "It is our prayer that we continue to be the lighthouse that we shoud be on the beaches." Rev. Dennis Pledger, son of charter members, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Pledger, was called as pastor, serving from February 1978-1980. Dr. Virgil Courts served as pastor from October 1980-82. Bro. Dennis Pledger returned for a second term from September 1982-1986. It was under his ministry that the current plot of 10 acres on Middle Beach Road was purchased. Rev. Dan Wade was pastor from January 1987-88. Dr. Leroy Benefield and Bro. John Hardwick served as interim pastors until August 20, 1989, when our present pastor, Bro. Gregory George began his ministry. Under his leadership "The New Lighthouse" was constructed and dedicated on March 9, 1997. God has blessed G.B.B.C. on its new site. At the close of the first year we gratefully reported the following: 94 additional members, including 34 via baptism; 2 overflowing Sunday morning worship services (a third one has subsequently been added); 4 new Sunday School Classes, and numerous other new programs!!!
